Before you book
- Ask what the quoted price includes: size, taxes, required protection plan or insurance, access hours, deposit, lock, administrative fees, and move-in or delivery charges.
- Find out how billing renews, whether rates can change, what notice you need to end the rental, and whether there is a minimum term.
- Ask about temperature and humidity control in plain terms: what is controlled, how it is monitored, and what happens during an outage.
- Check your lease or facility agreement for prohibited items, access rules, security features, and claims procedures.
A facility’s use of words like “climate controlled” is not a substitute for the agreement or conditions suitable for a particular item. For instruments, artwork, electronics, wood furniture, or documents, follow manufacturer or specialist guidance.
Before you pack
Clean and dry items completely. Empty drawers and appliances, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for preparing them. Do not store food, hazardous materials, or anything the provider prohibits. Keep medications, important documents, valuables, and items you may need during the gap with you.
Make a basic inventory with box labels, contents, and a few photos. Keep a copy outside the unit. Label at least two sides of each box so the contents are still readable when it is stacked. If you plan to retrieve anything, make a simple map or list that notes where it sits. You do not need a warehouse barcode system; a phone note works.
Pack for access, not just maximum density
Put frequently needed things near the front. Leave a narrow path if the unit size allows. Stack heavier sturdy boxes low and avoid placing fragile items under weight. Use shelves or pallets only if the facility permits them and if they make sense for the space. Ask the provider how they recommend keeping items off the floor and away from walls.
Give the storage plan an end date
Set a calendar reminder before the next billing date. Review what is still there, what you can donate or sell, and whether the gap is ending or extending. Store the contract, access details, inventory, and receipts together. Future You should be able to find the unit number without searching all 400 photos from moving day.
